PAB - Theatre Job roles

IN this lesson we discussed job roles within the theatre industry. We created a chart using job roles we knew and researched and created a hierarchy with our chosen job roles here was the outcome of our chart.

Here are two examples in which were on our hierarchy that i researched into further what they are, what they do, who they work for, and how they get there. I chose a choreographer and a Dramaturg.

Choreographer -

A choreographer is someone who creates the movement throughout the performance whether it is within musical numbers or just in a scene if it involves more intricate blocking working with both dancers and actors. They are usually work in tandem with the performance director and musical director however the Performance/artistic Director has slight control over what they do within the production depending on its type and their artistic vision.

To become a choreographer you don't need specific qualifications these days gcses suffice as the technical eligibility, although a lot of choreographers these days have taken a degree in something related to the industry or dance and it really requires experience more than anything. Also they need to have skills such as communication as they need to be able to convey their ideas and visions to the dancers so that they execute the movement correctly and how they conceptualised it.

As a choreographer they can progress in different ways depending on the category in which they choreograph. For example they could choreograph musicals or contemporary dance pieces or ballet performances. For a choreographer progression is usually based on the scale of what they are choreographing so a student video would be a start, and then a professional music video you get paid for would be the main kind of progression a choreographer would encounter, or simply going from assistant choreographer to main choreographer.

Dramaturge -
A Dramaturge or Dramaturg is a literary editor who makes sure everything is factually, morally and emotionally correct within the script/performance for example different era pieces will need to be historically legitimate. They particularly work closely with the script writers, authors as it is their material in which they are reviewing, however they also work with performance directors, choreographer and performers when it comes to movement.

Although the majority of the time they have different dramaturges for written and practical as they have studied them in more detail instead of making one person do all the work. In different companies the Dramaturge can have more responsibility than just what the simple definition implies for example in some cases they assist in casting, help with the programmes, and printing and handing out scripts to actors working with particular ones on specific elements.

With being a Dramaturge there rent specific qualifications needed however an English qualification is quite essential within a writing occupation, you would also be good to have a drama and history qualification. Although there are certain courses at university in Dramaturgery in which you can take. Having historical knowledge and good researching skills are something a dramaturge also needs to have.

Dramaturges can progress to assistant directors within this industry however with enough experience Dramaturges can progress to almost any job within the theatre industry that associates with their such as producer, director even company manager.

An example video of a choreographer talking about his career:

BRIAN FRIEDMAN:

In the video Brian really emphasises how much he loves dance and how that if you like what you are doing you do it better talking about choreographing. I think this is really important and key thing for choreographers as you repeat a lot so if your not engaged with it your just going to lose interest and it will reflect in your work and yourself.

He repeats how it is very rewarding throughout talking about his different work experiences but how the best feeling as a choreographer was when he choreographed it first tour for Britney Spears and watching it come from paper to stage gives the best feeling that you can create something that has such a big effect.

Another big point he says to be a choreographer is to have Drive, if you want you have to make it happen no one else is going to give it to you easily.

He says to never Burn bridges, your word is your word and to keep your commitments even if a better offer comes your way, because karma will always come and bite you when you don't want it. His key words are to make sure the footprint you leave everywhere is a very neat one.
